What we use them for
Through Family First Life, we have access to Columbus Life’s permanent-life product lines. From an agent’s perspective, they tend to be a strong fit when:
- Indexed universal life is the conversation. Columbus Life is an active IUL writer and a regular comparison option when the goal is long-horizon cash-value accumulation. We run their illustrations alongside other IUL carriers as part of the side-by-side.
- The buyer prefers a privately held parent. As a member of Western & Southern Financial Group, Columbus Life sits inside a privately held organization rather than a publicly traded one. Some buyers care about that distinction.
- Long operating history matters. Both Columbus Life (1906) and its parent group (1888) have been writing life insurance for well over a century, which carries weight with some clients.
A note on financial strength
The A+ (Superior) AM Best rating shown above was confirmed from Columbus Life’s listing on the Western & Southern Financial Group site at the time this page was drafted. AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and Fitch ratings are reviewed periodically — pull current values from AM Best before citing any specific rating on a call.
When to consider another carrier
If the priority is annuities rather than permanent life, Columbus Life isn’t the right call — Athene, Corebridge, or Global Atlantic are the carriers to compare. If the priority is final-expense or simplified-issue, Mutual of Omaha’s Living Promise is widely written for that. Columbus Life is typically the answer when the conversation is IUL or broader cash-value permanent life.
