What we use them for
Through Family First Life, we have access to North American’s life and annuity product lines. From an agent’s perspective, they tend to be a strong fit when:
- Indexed universal life is the conversation. North American has long been one of the more active carriers in the IUL category, with multiple products designed around different funding patterns and policy goals. We routinely run their illustrations alongside other IUL carriers when the goal is cash-value-focused permanent coverage.
- The buyer prefers a privately held, employee-owned parent. As part of Sammons Financial Group, North American sits inside a privately held organization that is employee-owned through an ESOP — a structurally different ownership story than publicly traded carriers. Some buyers care about that; many don’t. We surface it when relevant.
- Annuity quotes on the same balance sheet. North American also writes fixed and fixed-indexed annuities, which can be useful when a household wants both life and annuity solutions reviewed together.
A note on financial strength
The ratings shown above were confirmed from North American’s own corporate site at the time this page was drafted. Specifically: AM Best A+ (Superior, affirmed August 13, 2025), S&P A+ (Strong, affirmed May 15, 2025), and Fitch A+ (Stable, affirmed June 17, 2025). Ratings change — pull current values from AM Best before citing any specific number on a call.
When to consider another carrier
If the goal is a recognizable national retail brand, Mutual of Omaha often feels more familiar to clients. If the goal is fraternal benefits, Foresters Financial is structured around that. North American tends to be the answer when the conversation is IUL-heavy or when a privately held, employee-owned parent matters to the buyer.
